One of the most popular social media sites, Twitter, has announced a new feature that will let people make money from ads appearing in their reply threads.
None other than Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who has been a vocal supporter of social media revenue sharing, made the announcement.
You Can Now Earn Money on Twitter
Elon Musk followed up the announcement by saying that to be eligible. Users must be subscribed to the Twitter Blue Verified program.
It can be recalled that the Twitter Blue program was one of the first paid features of the Elon Musk-led microblogging site. Ironically, users will have to pay $8 per month to have advertisers post ads on their Twitter replies.
Twitter Blue Verified is a new subscriber program allowing users to earn ad revenue from Twitter. The program is designed to reward users for their contributions to the platform and help create a sustainable revenue stream for creators.
Before this announcement, Twitter had long been chastised for not allowing users to monetize their presence on the platform. This new feature aims to address that concern by enabling users to earn money from their Twitter presence.
The revenue-sharing model is not new to social media, with similar programs in place for years on platforms such as YouTube and Twitch.
This shocking piece of news did not come with any more information, as the Chief Tweeter did not mention how the money would be split between advertisers, users, and Twitter. It will be interesting to see how this upcoming feature will play out for the 396 million-strong Twitter user base.
Twitter Making Musk Money
This newest offering is part of Elon Musk's initiatives to increase profitability and reduce costs at Twitter. In October 2022, Musk paid $44 billion to Twitter. He intended to turn it into a profitable venture.
Elon Musk has taken a number of cost-cutting measures to accomplish this. For example, he fired roughly half of the company's global workforce to save approximately $800 million in payroll costs and added the verification badge to the paid Twitter Blue subscription service.
Also, Twitter has said that API access will no longer be free and will instead start charging for it on Feb. 9.
Tech Times reported in November 2022 that half of Twitter's top advertisers had already abandoned the Musk-led platform, with more on the way.
Elon Musk has already lost half of the top 100 advertisers on Twitter, according to the latest study from the web-based nonprofit think tank Media Matters for America, less than a month after taking office.
Based on the research, these 50 companies have spent approximately $2 billion on Twitter advertisements since 2020. It is also worth noting that these large advertisers spent more than $750 million on advertising alone in 2022.
