Microsoft disclosed its intention to spend billions in OpenAI, the tech firm behind ChatGPT, a few weeks ago. And on Tuesday, Feb. 7, it announced that it would be reworking its Bing search engine and Edge web browser using artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.

Bing Updates

According to CNN, Microsoft introduced the upgrades during a press event held in Redmond, Washington. Bing will now do more than just provide a list of search results. It will now answer questions, talk with users, and develop content in response to user inquiries.

With the help of OpenAI, Bing will use a huge language model that is even more reliable than the one that powers the AI chatbot platform ChatGPT. To respond to user prompts and requests, these algorithms are trained on massive troves of web data.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated at Tuesday's presentation that it is a new paradigm for search and that rapid innovation is going to happen.

Shortly after Google, Microsoft's online search competitor, declared plans to release an AI tool comparable to ChatGPT in the coming weeks, Microsoft officially confirmed the event on Monday, Feb. 6.

Along with a snapshot of Nadella, OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman tweeted on Monday, "Hello from Redmond! Excited for the event tomorrow."

Microsoft's AI Investment

Microsoft, an early investor in OpenAI, announced motives to extend its current alliance with the firm last month as part of a larger initiative to integrate more AI into its array of products. OpenAI stated its goal to create progressively safe, helpful, and powerful AI tools, indicating that the multi-year investment would be put toward just that.

The company has previously said that ChatGPT will be used throughout its product line.

In an investment note on Monday, Wedbush analyst Dan Ives wrote, "While Bing today only has roughly 9% of the search market, further integrating this unique ChatGPT tool and algorithms into the Microsoft search platform could result in major share shifts away from Google...down the road."

Emergence of ChatGPT

Many people think the AI technology behind ChatGPT will significantly alter the internet search market. In the two months after its public release, the viral tool has been used to produce articles, narratives, and song lyrics and to provide answers to certain issues that would have previously been researched using Google or other search engines.

Management at Google apparently declared a "code red" scenario for the company's search business due to the massive focus on ChatGPT in recent weeks. In an apparent attempt to compete with the viral popularity of ChatGPT, Google introduced a new chatbot tool on Monday called "Bard."

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence tool gaining popularity quickly among consumers and IT firms. However, it has also highlighted certain concerns, such as the possibility that it might be used to disseminate biases and false information.
