Samsung Galaxy S23 series, including the Ultra variant, will be the first phones to rock the Gorilla Glass Victus 2, according to Corning.
Given that, can the new Galaxy flagship seriously survive concrete drops?
Samsung Galaxy S23's Gorilla Glass Victus 2
Corning announced that the Samsung Galaxy S23 is going to be the first device to feature its all-new Gorilla Glass Victus 2, as per a report by GSM Arena.
The South Korean phone maker has yet to introduce its all-new flagship lineup.
However, the glass maker, Corning, confirmed that the Galaxy S23 would feature version 2 of the Gorilla Glass Victus once the new flagship series debuts this February 1.
GSM Arena notes that the Galaxy S22 lineup was similarly the first smartphone to sport the Gorilla Glass Victus.
And now, its Version 2 is set to debut along with the much-awaited launch of the Galaxy S23 series, which includes a new Ultra model.
Can it Survive Concrete Drops?
Given that, the drop resistance of the all-new Samsung flagship lineup might see a significant upgrade.
Corning says that Version 2 better withstands drops, especially on rough surfaces like concrete. So the drop resistance on this new gorilla glass looks to have been upgraded.
The Verge says in its news story that the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 is the new standard for glass protection on smartphones. The latest version should easily withstand a one-meter drop in concrete.
It is worth noting that concrete is really hard to land on for these mobile phones due to its naturally rough surfaces. So the new Gorilla Glass took the extra mile to focus on this one.
The latest version also withstands two-meter drops on smoother surfaces like asphalt, similar to the performance of the first Gorilla Glass Victus, which the Galaxy S22 series featured.
Despite that, it remains to be seen how it holds up in the new smartphones of Samsung. Yet, Corning now says that the latest Gorilla Glass offers "improved drop performance on rough surfaces like concrete."
The spokesperson of Corning, Jamie Post, refused to speak about the performance of the upcoming Galaxy S23 lineup. Instead, the spokesperson says that "further questions about Samsung's product designs should be directed to Samsung."
As such, the drop resistance performance of the new lineup is hard to accurately tell, as early as now.
Anyway, Samsung is slated to launch its Galaxy S23 series in a few days. So we'll just have to wait and see.
