Samsung Galaxy S5 UI leak shows Google Now-style tile-based home screen: Could it be real?

Amidst preparations for the upcoming launch of Samsung's new flagship smartphone the Galaxy S5, Twitter leak-meastro @evleaks posted what could possibly be a new TouchWiz homescreen UI redesign that might ship with the Galaxy S5. If proven to be real, the new home screen will be a radical redesign of Samsung's current TouchWiz homescreen.

Evleaks has long been known for releasing prelaunch images and specs about the latest smartphones, tablets and gadgets. The latest leak shows a detailed screenshot of a new UI that the Twitter user says may come preloaded on the upcoming Galaxy S5. While the images look convincing, no official statement has been released by Samsung confirming or denying the veracity of the image.

At first glance, the possible home screen has a number of similarities to Google Now and Microsoft's Metro interface. Like Google Now and Metro, the leaked image uses a tile-based layout to display apps and information. Moreover, the possible home screen also has similarities to the Magazine user interface seen in the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2.

While Google Now comes installed in many Samsung products, the company added a few extra steps that users have to go through to bring up Google Now. Users currently need to press and hold the menu button to access the app. Other companies have implemented an easier to use swipe up gesture to bring up Google Now. If the leaked image is real, however, the point will seem rather moot since the new home screen appears to be both easy to the eyes and functional.

The leaked image shows a home screen that displays notifications from different apps, sources and topics. Along with tiles displaying info about exercise routines, flight schedules and instant messages, the leaked image also shows tiles displaying notifications about product deliveries, coffee shop orders and social media information. No information is currently available how the new home screen works as well as how it gains access to the information it displays. Consumers excited about the upcoming Galaxy S5 launch will have to wait for official announcements for more information about Samsung's new flagship model.
