Acquiring Teens App 'Gas'
Gas is a social media application for teens that are full of positive-centric features like positive affirmations and anonymous compliments. Users will be asked to send compliments by voting in polls for rankings. In short, you have to "gas" up your friends in the app.
In an announcement from Discord, the company excitedly shared the news that they will be acquiring Gas in the company. Despite this, the application will continue as its own standalone application.
As a part of the deal, the team will be joining Discord to help them with their efforts to continue growing across new audiences. Especially that their "mission has been to enable people to build community through fun experiences and genuine connections," the company stated.
Discord added that the founders of the application have a proven track record of creating and producing applications that are designed for exciting experiences. Through this deal, both companies will work to take things to the next level.
Discord and Gas as One
Combining the two applications into one, this acquisition may be more powerful than other partnerships.
Bloomberg reported that Discord has 150 million active users who flock to millions of servers to discuss different topics and gaming. Meanwhile, Gas reached 10 million downloads and almost $7 million in consumer spending since its launch in 2022.
Last October, Gas was named the hottest application by The Wall Street Journal, including other popular social applications in Apple App Store charts.
Gas' Previous Setbacks
Despite ending the year 2022 as good as any application in the market by being popular, Gas experienced setbacks during its exit. TechCrunch reported that the app underwent a widespread sex-trafficking rumor that was eventually proven false.
This impacted the application's downloads due to concerns from the users. Creator Nikita Bier stated that he and his team received death threats from hundreds of people because of this hoax. Other applications that went viral at the same time as Gas have also been hit with the same hoax including IRL and WalkSafe.
While Discord clarified that Gas will be a stand-alone application, the company announced just recently that it would integrate some of its applications into its servers. This means that Gas' features might be included in this integration.
Discord stated in its announcement, "We're always working to create an inclusive world where no one feels like an outsider and we're excited to welcome Gas to the Discord community as our next step to fulfilling that vision."
