'Mortal Kombat X' Developer Teases New Characters to be Revealed Jan. 29

The Mortal Kombat video game franchise continues with the upcoming Mortal Kombat X, the latest installment for the popular fighting game series.

Ed Boon, co-creator of Mortal Kombat, teased in a tweet that up to two new characters for the game could be unveiled in a live stream by NetherRealm studios.

The live stream, which will be held on the Twitch channel of NetherRealm, will start on 1:00 pm PT / 3:00pm CT/ 4:00 pm ET. The live stream will feature a demonstration of the gameplay for the upcoming video game, along with the revelation of at least one character.

However, a follow-up tweet by Boon hinted that there could be two characters revealed during the livestream, along with additional videos for Mortal Kombat X.

NetherRealm recently released a new gameplay trailer for Mortal Kombat X that featured the latest additions to the game's roster of fighters, namely series mainstays Kung Lao and Kitana.

Mortal Kombat X takes place after 25 years from the last installment of the video game. Quan Chi, the tattooed fighter, has already been revealed to be returning to the roster of fighters for the game. Boon tweeted a photo of the boots of six fighters in Mortal Kombat X, but so far only Quan Chi has been confirmed from the image.

In a previous interview with video game website IGN, Boon revealed that Mortal Kombat X will be a direct continuation of the events that occurred in Mortal Kombat 9. However, Mortal Kombat X will cover the period from directly after Mortal Kombat 9 until 25 years, with the stories laid out in the latest video game in a non-linear fashion.

"You still play the different chapters and each chapter has a character where it follows their actions, but instead of just jumping from one character to the next, it'll jump in time as well. So all of a sudden, you may have a flashback and you'll participate in those, but sometimes the story will just move forward five or ten years," Boon said.

Boon added that there will be several old characters that will not make it to the roster of fighters for Mortal Kombat X. However, Boon said that the roster would still grow with downloadable content that would be released after the launch of the game, including fighters exclusive for specific consoles.

Mortal Kombat X, tagged as one of the five games that users of IGN are most excited to be released this year, will be launched for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 on Apr. 14.
