Oppo Revises Software Upgrade Commitments To Upcoming Flagship Models After Samsung, OnePlus

Oppo follows suit after OnePlus and Samsung's pledge.

Oppo announces its recent pledge to guarantee longer software updates starting in 2023.

Recently, OnePlus increased its software update promise, pledging four significant Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates for some devices in 2023.

Oppo follows suit in announcing that it will provide selected 2023 flagships with four platform updates and five years of security patches, according to Oppo's latest press release. Oppo also disclosed that their ColorOS 13, based on Android 13, will be rolled out quicker than any other previous version of the operating system in addition to revealing its improved software update pledge.

According to the company, this is a 50% increase from the global deployment of ColorOS 12 last year, which reportedly benefited three times as many consumers. Oppo has released ColorOS 13 to 33 smartphone models worldwide since its August presentation.

What is Oppo's ColorOS?

According to GSM Arena, the ColorOS 13 was introduced this year on August 18 and is a result of Oppo's concentrated efforts to deliver it to existing phones for the fastest rollout out of any ColorOS version yet.

Lucky for tech enthusiasts, the recent debut of the ColorOS 13 comes with even more exciting news. Oppo will be extending the software support for select flagships starting in 2023.

For particular premium models, 4 OS updates and five years of security fixes are planned. This is consistent with the pledge that OnePlus made earlier this year, with currently only 3 OS updates and five years of fixes. This upgrade timetable, which Samsung stretched back to their 2021 flagships, was initially made available by the company.

Returning to the most recent OS, ColorOS 13, 33 Oppo models have received the update internationally, a record-breaking number, specifically 50% more than ColorOS 12, for instance. Due to this, it has reached three times as many people as ColorOS 12 did in its first four months of availability.

Did Oppo's Software Upgrade Commitment Copy OnePlus, and Samsung?

Following a recent statement regarding its new ColorOS update strategy, Oppo promises to provide four major ColorOS updates and five years of ongoing security updates for a chosen group of its flagship models beginning in 2023.

Interestingly, the move comes after OnePlus and Samsung expressed a similar commitment to users.

According to XDA-Developers, Oppo is now the third Android OEM to make a four-year OS upgrade and five-year security update guarantee. The only other OEMs who guarantee software updates for the same period of time are Samsung and OnePlus.

However, Samsung's software update service is still the strongest among Android OEMs. However, OnePlus and Oppo have not disclosed how quickly upgrades can or will be sent to devices.

Among other competitors of Android devices, Google is still falling behind since it only provides four years of security updates and three significant improvements for its Pixel portfolio.
