Lara Croft Is Returning: Amazon to Publish Crystal Dynamics' Next 'Tomb Raider' Game

This sequel will be created using Unreal Engine 5.

The new Tomb Raider game was revealed today by Amazon Games and Crystal Dynamics, who have joined forces to release it on many platforms.

A new Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) game starring Lara Croft is in the works, as reported by VentureBeat. The development studio is Crystal Dynamics, and Amazon Games will handle both localized and worldwide distribution.

Lara Croft Returns

The upcoming Tomb Raider game is a narrative-driven, single-player adventure that follows Lara Croft's journey. It has no title yet.

It includes putting players in charge of the multifaceted hero Lara Croft and placing them in a world that encourages and rewards exploration and inventive pathfinding while also providing challenging puzzles and a wide variety of enemies to overcome.

Amazon-Crystal Alliance

Vice president of Amazon Games Christoph Hartmann believes that Tomb Raider is one of the most popular entertainment franchises of all time.

"Amazon Games is committed to bringing players games of the highest quality, from the best developers, across all variety of platforms and genres, and we're honored by the opportunity to work with this storied developer and franchise."

Hartmann expressed their team's excitement to work with the brilliant minds at Crystal Dynamics to deliver the next chapter in the Lara Croft adventure to global gamers.

According to Amazon, Crystal Dynamics plans to employ UE5 to create the most extensive Tomb Raider game yet. The game is still in the planning stages, and more information will be provided at a later time.

In May, entertainment company Square Enix parted ways with Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal, and Eidos Montreal by selling them to Embracer Group for $300 million.

Scot Amos, head of the studio at Crystal Dynamics, said in a statement that Crystal Dynamics has an exceptional opportunity after the acquisition to "redefine what a publishing partnership is for Tomb Raider."

"Transformative is what we're looking for, and with Amazon Games, we found a team that shares our creative vision, ambitions, and values for a Lara Croft universe across the spectrum of possibilities," Amos added.

In the Gaming Industry

In their 30 years of business, Crystal Dynamics has created and released various critically acclaimed titles, including the Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider series.

There have been over 20 games in the Tomb Raider franchise, and as per VentureBeat, the series has over 170 million players based on a survey.

Since the first game came out in 1996, the title has gathered over 95 million units sold.

More than 200 "Best of" awards and nominations were given to the latest "Survivor Trilogy," which consists of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018).

Inking this deal with Crystal Dynamics shows Amazon Games' commitment to its triple-A publishing ambitions, which already include titles like Lost Ark from Smilegate RPG and Blue Protocol from Bandai Namco Online. Both of which were revealed recently.

Amazon Games has already released the multiplayer games New World and Lost Ark, but the next Tomb Raider game will be the company's first narrative-driven single-player game.
