Singaporean drivers can now easily detect the availability of EV charging ports in the country through an app.
According to The Strait Times, they can now rely on MyTransport.SG mobile app to see real-time data such as charging location and charger status.
Dedicated Mobile App For EV Drivers
Singapore's LTA (Land Transport Authority) has recently brought a technology that will help drivers know the available EV chargers across the country in real-time.
The mobile app is capable of storing numerous information on its database, including the name of over 1,000 charging points. The majority of them were owned by the two operators who first entered the platform: SP Mobility and ComfortDelGro Engie.
As of now, Singaporeans and other people who currently reside in the country can now use MyTransport.SG app. At the time, the app had only nine operators with different payment arrangements.
It is expected that the EV charging ports across the country will expand in the next two years. Singaporean authorities plan to add more Housing Board car parks.
While there are over 3,600 charging ports this year, an additional number of 12,000 charging stations will be added by 2025. In the next five years, Singapore is expected to include 60,000 charging ports for expansion.
Common Issues Motorists Face on the App
Since it's still in an early trial phase, the mobile app will need the users to sign up for the services first. More importantly, some motorists complain about the lag that appears when information shows up on the platform.
According to Mr. Dean Cher, the Head of Mobility at SP Group, the company aims to achieve "real-time information" on MyTransport.SG app next year.
While some people feel that the app is inconvenient for them, some companies have already appreciated what it could offer. According to them, the app already listed its charging spots so users can now check the availability of the service at the location.
Per Walter Theseira, an economics professor from the Singapore University of Social Sciences, the app can expand its usefulness to "professional motorists" by providing the availability information and charger location for them.
This app will be their go-to reminder for passenger drivers who drive taxis and cars daily whenever their EVs need to charge up on a particular day.
"I suspect that for most motorists, especially those with families, their use patterns tend to be quite consistent over time. Once they learn about charging availability and patterns, they are set and won't need much new information," Theseira added.
