Epic Games' New RealityScan App Turns Real-Life Photos into 3D Models Using Your iPhone

As per the latest news story by Engadget, Epic Games has rolled out its new RealityScan iOS app to the Apple App Store, allowing iPhone users to download it.

All users have to do is scan a real-life object using the cameras of their smartphones. And from there, the new iOS app does all the legwork to turn it into a 3D model.

So without sweat, you can transform photos into high-fidelity 3D assets thanks to the RealityScan app.

It is worth noting that the gaming giant previously bought Capturing Reality, which is a firm that focuses on making photogrammetry apps. In fact, it already has desktop software that sort of does the same thing.

But this time, RealityScan is available to mobile phone users.

According to a recent report by the Venture Beat, it is all possible through the cloud processing that the app utilizes. And as such, the free app transforms any 2D photo into a stunning 3D model without requiring complex skills from its users.

How to Download and Use RealityScan on iOS

Venture Beat notes in its report that RealityScan is now available to download on the Apple iOS App Store, enabling iPhone users to install it free of charge.

After installing the app, users are required to log in or sign up to their Epic Games account.

Once it has been set up, they could start taking at least 20 photos of the real-life object they want to turn into a 3D model. The multiple shots should cover all sides of the item to help the app transform it from 2D photos.

However, Engadget says that the app appears to work best for larger objects.

How About Android Users?

Epic previously assured the Android users that the RealityScan app is debuting on the Google Play Store before the year ends.

However, even as the app concluded its closed beta, it still has yet to launch for Android users. But to be fair, there are still a couple of days before 2022 comes to its final curtain call. So it might be available in the remaining few weeks.
