After several frustrations from fans regarding the ticket sales of her upcoming tour, Taylor Swift responded on her Instagram regarding Ticketmaster's decision on canceling the public ticket sales due to high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet the expected demand.
Taylor Swift's Response
Taylor Swift released a statement on her Instagram Story, as Live Nation's Ticketmaster announced the cancelation of selling public tickets. Based on a report from The Verge, Swift is just as mad as the fans about the outcome of selling. The decision of canceling the public ticket sales was done because of high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet the expected demand.
Swift stated, "It's really difficult for me to trust an outside entity with these relationships and loyalties, and excruciating for me to just watch mistakes happen with no recourse." She added that she will be trying to figure out how to improve this situation as she moves forward from this fiasco, but clarified that no excuses will be going to made for anyone regarding what happened.
As per her statement, Swift asked and assured the organizer multiple times if they could handle the demand, which assured her that they could. A total of 2.4 million people got tickets but said that it felt wrong for it to be celebrated as "a lot of them feel like they went through several bear attacks to get them," she stated.
Canceling Public Ticket Sales
On Thursday, Ticketmaster canceled the planned public sales for the upcoming tour of the singer, after conducting a pre-selling for registered fans through Ticketmaster's Verified Fan program. The company stated that "Due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand tomorrow's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been canceled."
Millions of fans were locked out on the site as they wait for their queue as per The New York Times. In a now-deleted blog post, Ticketmaster stated that a total of 3.5 million people registered for the said program, and 1.5 million of them were given a special access code, while the remaining two million verified fans were on waitlisted. These codes are their invitation for the pre-selling of tickers for Swift's 52 tour days in North America.
Ticketmaster's Take
Liberty Media Chief Executive Officer Greg Maffei, which is a major stockholder of Live Nation, defended the outcome of the sale and blamed the unexpectedly high demand from 14 million users. "It's a function of Taylor Swift. The site was supposed to open up for 1.5 million verified Taylor Swift fans. We had 14 million people hit the site, including bots, which are not supposed to be there," he stated via CNBC. 2 million tickets were sold on Tuesday and he added that with Taylor Swift's intensity, she could have filled 900 stadiums in total.
