Onewheel Boards Considered as 'Dangerous'

Based on a statement released on Wednesday, the Consumer Product Safety Commission warned American citizens on using Onewheel boards, as it may cause physical injuries. CPSC also discouraged buying these types of vehicles from its original models up to the newest models like the GT and Pint X. As per the report, several people have been affected by these vehicles due to forcefully ejecting riders and abruptly stopping their balance.

At least four deaths and multiple injuries were reported by CPSC from the year 2019 to 2021. According to a report from CNet, among the injuries reported were traumatic brain injury, concussion, paralysis, upper-body fractures, lower-body fractures, and ligament damage.

"CPSC urges consumers not to buy the Onewheel. If you already own one or purchased one, do not use it due to the ejection hazard. CPSC urges consumers NOT to resell or donate the Onewheel so others are not put in danger by the hazard," as per the statement. If any incidents regarding Onewheel or any dangerous product occurred, the government encourages citizens to report on SaferProducts.gov.

Future Motion's Response

Despite the reported incidents that were presented by CPSC in their statement, Future Motion, the creator of the mentioned vehicle, refused a recall and rejected these stances from the government. Engadget reported that the company stated that these warnings were "unjustified and alarmist", as their boards are safe if used responsibly with appropriate safety equipment.

The company added that there has been always a risk of using any boards (even bikes), and these were already known by the owners since most of its market are already adults. "Future Motion has evaluated a number of boards that the rider claims suddenly stopped, and in no case have we found any underlying technical issue with the board. All of these boards performed as designed and were test ridden for many miles without any performance issues," the company argued.
