Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Explained: New Chip Comes with Ray-Tracing and WiFi 7

What makes the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 better than its predecessors?

Qualcomm has officially announced its new chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, after months of the chip being speculated. The chip is designed to do two major things, correct the Samsung vanilla mess and replace the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Comes with the Model Number SM8550-AB

The new chipset comes with major improvements in different aspects, along with the introduction of cutting-edge ARMv9 architecture. Qualcomm is also raising the bar of innovation by introducing ray-tracing and WiFi 7 to the market, as seen on GSM Arena.

According to the story by Giz China, the brand new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 uses the model number SM8550-AB. As per speculations, the company is not entering the 3nm and will stick to its 4nm node for at least another year.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Aims to Correct the Issues of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

The flagship is estimated to launch in the next few weeks. The chip will be focusing on improving its power efficiency. Flagship SoCs are mainly about performance, but the previous Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 had to compromise energy efficiency.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 also came with thermal issues, as explained in an article by Phone Arena, which was something that affected Qualcomm after the Snapdragon 810. Due to this, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to correct the issues.

The New Chip Expects Improvements to CPU Performance and Power Efficiency Increase

The new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will bring new power-efficiency improvements, allowing it to surpass the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. The brand new 3 x Kyro CPU is expected to deliver up to 35% more performance with a power efficiency of up to 40% increase.

The new chip also keeps the clock speeds of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, but its configuration remains different. There will also be a 1 x ARM Cortex-X3 (Kyro Prime) core which will run at 3.2 GHz.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Additional Features Including Multi-Thread Workloads Running at 2.8 GHz

The chip is expected to bring high single-threaded performance and will come with 4 x Performance cores for multi-thread workloads. The multi-threaded workloads are expected to run at 2.8 GHz.

For the first time, Qualcomm will be adopting three efficiency cores along with a clock speed of 2.0 GHz. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will also support newer memory technologies.

New Adreno GPU is Expected to Bring 25% Higher Performance and 45% Better Efficiency

For example, its RAM will jump to the LPDDR5X tech with up to 4,200 MHz. Regarding storage, the chip will have the new UFS 4.0 format, which will replace the tired UFS 3.1 standard.

There will also be significant graphics improvement. The new Adreno GPU promises 25% higher performance and better efficiency of up to 45%.

The company also comes with hardware-accelerated ray-tracing to make it more attractive to the mobile gaming scene. This will allow developers to explore ray tracing in mobile games.

Chip to Also Come with WiFi 7 Technology

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 als9 comes with WiFi 7 already packed on the new SoC. It will feature 802.11be through the new FastConnect 78000 system for faster speeds.

The WiFi 7 feature is expected to top a massive 5.6 Gbps speed.
