Russian Missile Reportedly Kills 2 People in Poland, Sparks WW3 Fears

Poland is now considering invoking NATO's Article 4.

Poland reported early on Wednesday that a Russian missile had struck the country's eastern region, killing two people in the explosion. This was the first time Russian weapons impacted a NATO nation during its war with Ukraine, according to a report by AP.

The Russian ambassador was called, according to a statement from the Polish government, and Zbigniew Rau demanded prompt, in-depth explanations about the attack.

With its heaviest missile onslaught to yet on Tuesday, Russia bombarded Ukraine's energy sector, hitting targets throughout the nation and creating massive blackouts, as per AP.

Moldova was also impacted by the barrage since it was near the border. After the missiles destroyed a crucial power line supplying the tiny nation, an official confirmed that they experienced widespread power outages.

In a statement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russia has blacked out multiple cities after launching at least 85 missiles, most of which were directed against the nation's power plants.

According to the Ukrainian energy minister, the attack, which hit both the power generation and transmission networks, was the largest shelling of power infrastructure during the nearly nine-month-old Russian invasion.

World War 3 Fears

The reported attack is a significant escalation in the raging Ukraine-Russia war as it impacted a NATO nation like Poland. The words "Poland", "NATO", and "Russia", have all occupied the top three trending US trends on Twitter as netizens express their fears for a potential World War 3.

Reuters reported that the NATO member is already considering invoking Article 4 of the military alliance treaty, which states that "the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened."

Even though the investigation is still ongoing, speculations arise that Poland may also invoke NATO's Article 5, which says that "the Parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all."

Polish President Andrzej Duda said that the US has sent its experts to investigate the site. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg also noted on Tuesday that there is a need for facts to be "established" first.

This is a developing story.
