As Twitter has been surrounded by controversy after new management, users are coming up with their own escape plans.
Following Elon Musk's social media takeover, Twitter has become the subject of numerous headlines from his chaotic first week as the new boss. From thousands of Twitter employees getting laid off to accounts getting banned permanently, users are left wondering if the social media app has finally entered its flop era.
Amidst the social media app's questionable fate, several celebrities formerly active on Twitter, such as Gigi Hadid, Whoopi Goldberg, Toni Braxton, Shonda Rhimes, and more, have reportedly left the app, according to NBC News. Additionally, Musk has announced his plans to charge people $8 a month for the Twitter blue check mark as a way to promote free speech and verify users' identities.
While a majority of users are sticking around the app to see how Musk's takeover plays out, here are other social media platforms you can consider outside of Twitter.

Mastodon
Amidst the social media buzz, Mastodon has been the talk of the town as an alternative to Twitter. Mastodon was launched in 2016 by software developer Eugen Rochko based on his dissatisfaction with Twitter and the platform's centralized control.
Since Mastodon is a decentralized network of servers, no central authority owns and governs the entire communications platform, according to The Conversation.
Additionally, Mastodon boasts features that are not present on Twitter as the app gains popularity for users looking to make the switch.
Tribel Social
Tribel is an open-source and cloud-based social networking platform with a customizable community platform to connect, engage, and retain customers. While its user interface may be similar to Facebook, the app builds a user's feed based on its algorithm and uses topics to categorize posts, similar to Reddit.
Interestingly, the social media platform expressed its views on Musk's Twitter takeover, inviting users to give them a try as an alternative, according to the National News.
"Unlike Musk's Twitter, we don't put ad revenue over decency & truth," a representative for Tribel expressed. "Purveyors of racism and pro-Putin propaganda are not welcome on Tribel, our pro-democracy Twitter alternative."
Tumblr
If you're looking for a similar culture from Twitter's entertainment hub of memes, consider trying out Tumblr.
While the social media platform may seem intimidating to users who were not part of its 2010 glory days, the app still remains a hivemind of popular culture that thrives on GIFs and memes. In contrast to Twitter's short post limit, Tumblr is essentially a microblogging platform where posts can be expressed through different formats such as quotes, photos, videos, threads, and more.
Additionally, Tumblr recently announced that it would revisit its content guideline rules, according to EuroNews, allowing users to post art and content with a broader range of expression.
Bluesky
An interesting option to move on from Twitter would be to enter an app launched by the same mind, namely, Bluesky.
According to Yahoo, Twitter co-founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey launched Bluesky way back in 2019 as a way to decentralize its predecessor, Twitter. While not much is known about the app, Dorsey describes the project as "a competitor to any company trying to own the underlying fundamentals for social media or the data of the people using it."
As of now, Bluesky is still under development, but interested users looking for a potential alternative to Twitter can sign up and join the waitlist for a chance to test the beta.
