For the first time, LG Display has revealed the first 12-inch stretchable display in the world. The South Korean tech giant, famous for developing display technologies, takes its newest product to a whole new level thanks to this high-resolution display.
According to Korea Times, you can fold, twist, or extend this display, and it won't get damaged or distorted. The electronics device corporation relied on free-form technology to enable its capability.
LG Stretchable Display Can Expand by 20%
In a report by Engadget, LG has developed a next-gen display that you can bend or pull. While the typical display will be easily damaged, the company assures that it will stay in its original shape and adapt to the physical changes on contact.
Before, LG Display launched foldable and bendable displays for smartphones. However, they have a limitation: they cannot be stretched out.
The 12-inch high-resolution display can extend by 20%. As LG says in its press release, it's highly durable but flexible at the same time. The firm hopes that it will be commercialized one day for some of its products.
Just like rubber, it boasts flexibility similar to it. It's capable of stretching for up to 14 inches, so it's very elastic. Aside from that, it can withstand external forces' impacts thanks to its micro-LED light.
If you attempt to distort it over 1,000 times, it will only adjust its form. This is all attributed to its s-form spring-wired structure, which makes it resistant to wear and tear.
"The stretchable display's revolutionary technology offers next-level versatility for various daily scenarios. Easily attachable to curved surfaces such as skin, clothing, furniture, automobiles and aircraft, this unique innovation expands the potential of the display in various industries including fashion, wearables, mobility and gaming," LG Display wrote in a press release on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

LG Envisions to Incorporate Stretchable Display into Certain Products
The experiment with this lightweight display does not make it stretchable thus far. LG Display says it aims to revolutionize its technology to mix it up with other products.
As such, it envisions incorporating the stretchable display and making it useful in the field of automobiles, clothing, and smart home. The innovation could go a long way, and it could also serve the gaming and fashion industry.
The Stretchable display of LG marks the successful outcome of the company and South Korea's Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy or MOTIE two years ago.
The R&D project, which MOTIE spearheaded, hopes to introduce a more advanced lineup of displays for today's generation. The industrial sector has been working with LG to improve the display industry in the country and some parts of the world.
According to LG Display CTO and Executive VP Soo-young Yoon, the company will continue the project to improve the competitive side of South Korea when it comes to displaying technologies.
