Stranger Things is getting its own virtual reality psychological horror game, and here's what we know so far.
Netflix has teamed up with game developer Tender Claws to announce a Stranger Things VR Game set to release in winter 2023 on all VR platforms, according to Tribune. The new game announcement comes six years after Netflix released its first VR concept on the Stranger Things Official Youtube.
Indie game studio Tender Claws is prominently known for game titles like Wide Ocean Big Jacket, The Under Presents, and other games. Known for unique approaches across different media, the studio was also the mastermind behind the Virtual, Virtual Reality game along with its sequel, Virtual, Virtual Reality 2.
Tender Claws posted the announcement of the upcoming Stranger Things VR project on their official Twitter.
Stranger Things VR Gameplay: Teaser Trailer and What We Know So Far
According to Gamespot, a press release from Netflix and game developer Tender Claws revealed that the VR game would let players dive into the world of the upside-down and fictional town of Hawkins from the point of view of Season four villain Vecna.
In addition to the VR game's theme of psychological horror, the gameplay will also lean towards an action genre as the player explores and fights through the upside-down with Vecna's goal of taking "revenge on Eleven and Hawkins".
The video teaser showcased parts of the gameplay wherein the player, as Vecna, can explore unknown realities while forming the hive mind and taming the void from the upside-down. Players will also be able to "invade minds and conjure nightmares," as seen on Stranger Things season four, according to Tribune.
Additionally, the Stranger Things VR will also reveal more about the series' lore based on Vecna's point of view from past seasons of the series and how he influenced the story before his official season four debut.
Stranger Things VR will launch on "major VR platforms," according to Netflix's press release on the game. Stranger Things VR is set to launch in the winter of 2023.
Netflix's Gaming Platform Expanding Its Titles
The move to create the Stranger Things VR game comes a year after Netflix started developing its gaming platform.
In July 2021, Netflix hired Mike Verdu as vice president of game development amidst their growing media platform. Since building a team for game development, Netflix has released 23 exclusive mobile games with its library, with some based on their popular television series such as Stranger Things and Hextech Mayhem.
Aside from the Stranger Things VR Game, Netflix reveals that it also has plans to release game titles based on The Queen's Gambit and Money Heist.
