Elon Musk's Twitter is developing a paid direct chat feature where Twitter users would spend a few dollars on sending direct messages to their favorite "Very Important Tweeter." According to close sources, these are some of Musk's ideas for additional Twitter features that would bring in more money.

Twitter 'Paid' DM Feature

According to The New York Times, Elon Musk's Twitter is working on a new way to allow users to send direct messages to high-profile accounts (celebrities, actors/actresses, musicians, and any public figure) on Twitter through a paid DM feature. In the article, Twitter's paid direct messaging to verified users, known as "Very Important Tweeters," is already in motion, and two people reportedly disclosed the info anonymously.

In the same article, the new function will charge customers a few bucks (not clear how much exactly yet) per one message when contacting celebrities, politicians, or other significant figures. These sponsored direct messages will appear in a distinct section of Twitter's "Messages" section. But this would not guarantee that all who paid would get their messages returned since these "Very Important Tweeters" would then choose which sponsored messages they wanted to receive.

As per the article, Twitter recently tested a paid direct messaging service prototype. Yahoo! Finance reports, "A user ONCE sent a message to the American rapper Post Malone, asking him about his favorite songs."

The New York Times claimed, using internal papers and individuals, that Twitter had not yet established a payment system. However, the corporation would almost certainly receive a part of the money from the purchased texts. People familiar with the situation stated that the corporation had not guaranteed the feature's release date and that the plans were still in the works. At the moment, it remains unclear whether the feature was in the works before Musk's $44 billion purchase of the company on Friday.

The sponsored message feature would be part of Musk's ambition to produce more paid content on Twitter, which would help bring in more money. This is according to several sources, who cited 10 current and former employees as well as company records.

More Changes on Twitter?

Following Musk's acquisition of Twitter, various modifications to the network have emerged. Musk has stated that many users who have previously been banned for life from Twitter, including Donald Trump, will be welcomed back. However, it is taking longer than some people anticipated.

There will also be more paid features to bring more money to the company, including an $8-per-month cost for "Twitter Blue," which he aims to revamp, and "Paywalled Video," a feature that would charge users for video content. Nonetheless, this would not be the first and last paid service available to Twitter users. While most people would regard this as another means for Musk to make billions, the impending pay-to-DM feature may become a hit among Twitter users who are willing to pay to chat with their favorite Twitter celebrities.
