Optis, a company that owns globally-distributed patents related to 4G and 3G LTE essential technologies, has the upper hand.
This is because Apple lost its U.K. patent appeal over the essential technology patents for its iOS smartphones.

Apple Vs. Optis Update: iPhone Maker Loses UK Patent Appeal
According to Bloomberg's latest report, the Court of Appeal decided to uphold the recent decision of allowing Optis to restrict Apple from using essential 4G and 3G patents.

If Apple wants to continue using these wireless technology patents, it must commit to reasonable and fair terms of use.
On Thursday, Oct. 27, Judge Richard Arnold explained that Apple needs to agree to take a global license over conventional essential patents on terms the court considers reasonable and fair.
If ever the iPhone maker takes this suggestion, Reuters reported that an injunction on utilizing the patents in Wales and England could be prevented.
This just means that Apple may soon have limitations when using 3G and 4G patents to enhance its iPhone wireless connectivity features.
Apple Vs. Optis History
The issue between Apple and Optis Cellular Technology LLC began after Optis filed a lawsuit against the iPhone maker in 2019.
The patent owner claimed that the iPhone maker infringed on around eight patents. But Apple rejected this accusation.
The tech manufacturer defended itself, saying that Optis abused its dominant position. As of press time, both of the companies haven't commented on their ongoing conflict.
