Pixel Watch Bootloader: Unlockable for All to Install ROMs, But It is a Pain to Do

Pixel Watch can get new ROMs, but it is a double-edge sword.

There is good news for all Android modders who recently purchased a Pixel Watch for their needs, especially with the latest development that confirms the bootloader is unlockable for the device. Google said that users may access it and use it to modify their wearable devices with the Android ROMs they prefer and want for it.

However, it is not exactly an easy task to do, and in fact, it is a pain as Google also mentioned, saying that there would be a challenge to accomplish it.

XDA Developers first reported that Google's Pixel Watch is available for mods that will elevate the device's experience. The device's bootloader is unlockable for all, which means that users may access the wearable tech's mods and run third-party systems or software for their preferences to elevate the smartwatch.

However, while this is available for mods, it is not exactly something that Google made easily accessible for all, unlike that of its Pixel smartphones.

A famous online insider said that the wearable device's fastboot may be entered with the bootloader to access this, but another obstacle awaits those who want to mod the watch.

Pixel Watch Bootloader is a Pain to Access

The online insider's method includes accessing the four pogo pins that require a special USB cable to access, and here is where the real challenge starts. At the present, Fitbit said that it does not provide the special cable to access the Pixel's bootloader.

Users would need to cut up a USB cable to fit these individual wires that are necessary for access. Additionally, once in and able to access the fastboot, there is no guarantee that users may install a new ROM despite unlocking the bootloader.

Google and its Pixel Watch

For a long time, leakers and speculators have watched Google closely for their delivery of the Pixel Watch, particularly as the device was highly anticipated by the public since its introduction via the I/O event. The device was supposedly released in 2016 for the public to see, but Google backed out of it and was unknown to many until 2021.

Several insiders revealed their knowledge and information on Google's "Rohan," a wearable device that will be separate from Fitbit, a known Google-acquired wearable tech company.

Fast forward to 2022, the world already saw the Pixel Watch unveil for all, centering on the MadeByGoogle event for the Pixel lineup which brought new devices for all.

The Pixel Watch is a celebrated accessory for the new Pixel 7 smartphones, but it received mixed reviews from critics and testers as it came out.

Nevertheless, one thing that the Pixel Watch has an edge over its competitors is its possibility for a modification that will help users experience more of the wearable tech. However, there is a challenge for everyone to get this mod to work, especially as Google did not exactly allow users to access it easily, with a need to get their hands on a special cable for it to work.
