Apple's iOS 16 faces grave claims against its integrity as a device to use VPN with, as security researchers now claim that there are issues with the data it keeps private for all. The company's system allegedly leaks several data from DNS requests, and it gives unencrypted data to Apple services while using VPNs with the latest iOS 16.
It is the same issue as past operating systems claim the researchers, something which Apple received notices about for the past years since iOS 13.
iOS 16 VPN Leaks Data to Apple Services Outside
Canada and Germany-based security research company, Musk, detailed that their latest study of the iOS 16 regarding its VPN use saw massive flaws and security risks for users. This research focused on VPN use for the new OS, and the researchers found out that Apple leaks unencrypted data to the Cupertino giant's services despite being under the VPN tunnel.
The services that bypass the VPN tunnel and its features include Apple's Maps, Health, and Wallet, meaning that they communicate with the company and still share data despite being in a private network.
The researchers further claimed and showed the public via their demonstration video that Apple leaks DNS requests while the virtual private network from ProtonVPN and Wireshark was enabled.
Is the iOS 16 Unsafe for Regular Use?
According to CNET, the vulnerability was initially found on iOS 13.3.1, with different reports stemming years after the first sighting of the problem. There was one report from 2020 as per Mullvad VPN.
Michael Horowitz also reported an issue with the iOS 15.6.1 version regarding its VPN use and the data leaks which happen while users have the service turned on for use. This report is a wake-up call for Apple, especially as users that opt for VPN want additional protection, hence its use.
iOS 16 and its Security Features
Apple's latest operating system version, the iOS 16, is highly regarded for the many features it brings to the iPhone and iPad (with the iPadOS 16) available for all users eligible to download it. One of the most useful features here is its ability to detect duplicate images and compile them into one folder where users may review and help clean up for additional storage.
Since iOS 16's availability and downloads for users, those not enjoying its features cannot downgrade back to iOS 15.6.1 as Apple does not allow it.
However, despite the many useful features of the iOS 16, the company still promises more advanced safety and security with the device's new system to protect it from many threats looming around.
The iOS 16 may be advanced and secure with its offers, but the new information from security researchers' studies found that it does not fully embrace what the VPN stands for in its offers. Apple's flaw is massive and it may be the cause for hackers and threat actors to access data and steal them from users, marking a fatal flaw for iOS.
