FPS Game Shrapnel Unveils its First UE5-Based Gameplay Footage

UE5 could be the world's most sophisticated real-time 3D tool in the gaming industry.

Shrapnel, developer of the first-person shooter multiplayer game of the same name, released its first gameplay footage Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Prior to this, a cinematic trailer was shared on public last week. And according to GamesBeat, some doubted that the final look would be as excellent as the demo.

First Look at the Gameplay

As per an exclusive interview with GamesBeat, CEO Mark Long of Shrapnel company stated that the cinematic was created utilizing Epic Games' Unreal Engine 5 technology, which leverages capabilities like Nanite to compress an absurd number of polygons into a scene.

That exciting teaser demonstrated how the online multiplayer mode was inspired by Escape From Tarkov and how well it was designed to showcase the game's excellent visuals.

The Making of the Gameplay Footage

A team of movie, sound, and stunt professionals worked on the trailer, said Long. With the release of Unreal Engine 5 (UE5), the video game industry is now starting to adopt what Long considers to be the most cutting-edge real-time 3D production engine available today. They used it to create the kind of fun games and fancy visuals that gamers love.

It has never been easier to realize the creative vision, as Long put it, so big thanks to the Lumen lighting model and notably Epic's MetaHuman technology.

When asked why they decided to try the method, Long explained, "Normally virtual sets built for pre-rendered trailers are too polygonally dense and the raytracing too computationally intense to attempt recording, but the UE5 impressed us so much."

Epic's Nanite technology allowed them to consume the high-poly models and fine-tune them for multiplayer gameplay. The global illumination is rendered in real-time with the UE5 Lumen lighting model.

Men Behind Animation and Sounds

The cinematic teaser was developed and directed by gaming icon Jerry O'Flaherty in collaboration with Sydney-based animation studio Plastic Wax, whose credits include Fortnite, Tomb Radar, Hitman, and more.

O'Flaherty is a guru when it comes to using the Unreal Engine for films. The trailer was envisioned by Long to be filmed in a single take, with Plastic Wax directing motion-captured stunt actors.

Meanwhile, Oscar-nominated sound editor Alan Rankin oversaw the production of the film's music by Grammy-winning composer Jesper Kyd.

The World of Shrapnel

The world of Shrapnel is reportedly in the 2040s setting. The backstory goes that an enormous asteroid has caused a big portion of Earth to be bombarded by meteorites, rendering the region called the "Sacrifice Zone" uninhabitable.

With over 14,000 views for the last week's trailer achieved, many people are curious about what is going to be discovered in the game. There have been a lot of rumors going around about something called Sigma, which is a strange mineral.

As a fight rages for possession of the Sacrifice Zone and all of its secrets, the nations and businesses begin to assemble their own extraction armies.

In the preview, we see a group of soldiers competing with one another to see who can grab the material first and escape while the rest of the group is chasing. It is possible that a piece of Shrapnel may be worth millions of dollars.
