ByteDance released its newest virtual-reality headset in China earlier this month. The Pico 4 VR headset saw immediate success when the TikTok owner managed to sell over 100,000 units of it in just two weeks.
Pico 4 Sales Boom in China
Just a couple of weeks after the release of Pico 4 stand-alone VR headset, ByteDance immediately reaped profits from selling it in the biggest market.
According to The South China Morning Post, the popular wearable technology has quickly caught the attention of Chinese buyers who are looking for a good alternative to Meta's Quest 2.
At the moment, the Quest 2 VR headset is not yet available in China.
ByteDance sold at least 10,000 units of Pico 4 thanks to the bigger distributors in China including JD.com and Taobao. The latter was owned by Alibaba Group Holding.
Regarding the sold products, Pico did not specifically reveal the exact figures for the offline sales. However, Zhao Siquan, the senior analyst of IDC, said that the recent sales performance can be considered "fairly good" given that it just got released in the region.
"Most VR users in China are young people in first- and second-tier cities. Given Pico 4's specs and pricing, the product could be highly accepted by consumers. But its sales will also depend on the economic situation, as well as the company's promotions and content [on the platform]," Zhao said.

Why is Pico 4 a Good Pick For VR Fans?
In the same report by SCMP, the Pico 4 can compete with Quest 2 when it comes to some of its specifications. Both of these wearables boast a Snapdragon XR2 chipset, as well as a 90Hz refresh rate.
When it comes to the display, Pico 4 has an edge over Quest because it offers 2,160x2,160 pixels per eye. On the other hand, Meta's VR headset only features 1,823x1,920 pixels.
Aside from that, the Pico 4 VR headset sits at a lower price across Europe. It starts at $420 (429 Euros) for the 128GB variant. For bigger storage at 256GB, it is priced at 499 Euros.
The Quest 2 128GB model sells for 449.99 Euros while the 256 variant sits at 549.99 Euros.
It should be noted that Quest 2 offers Facebook access to Chinese users. Despite that, China has blocked social media access to all users in the country.
As of now, the reviewers are enjoying Pico 4 especially because of its lightweight design. However, some critics said that its lower price compensates for the lack of specs that will make it more balanced.
