Canadians may soon find robots knocking on their doors to deliver their pizzas after Pizza Hut deployed delivery robots in certain areas in Vancouver, Canada, reported first by News18.
"No One OutDelivers The Hut! After decades of delivering to your homes, robots can now deliver food to your door in select Vancouver areas," according to a tweet by Pizza Hut Canada.
The post also included a sneak peek of the delivery robot in charge of making pizza deliveries. The service's availability in some Vancouver areas has also been highlighted in the post.
The Firm Behind the Robots
Serve Robotics is the firm that created the pizza delivery bot. Ali Kashani, CEO of the robotics company, said that the bots would fill the gap caused by labor shortage instead of reducing employment.
The robots are named Raja and Hugo. They are the first of their kind in Vancouver, even though the project started in the United States a few years ago.
The Ph.D. holder disclosed that the bots had made over 25,000 deliveries in the US, where they have been in use for a few years.
The bots are also good for the environment because they are fully electric. According to Kashani, these bots will not negatively affect the environment, in contrast to delivery workers who ride in vehicles that pollute the air.
"It's different than bikes and scooters because you can't really do much with it, so there's no market for it. People can't use it personally," Kashani said in a statement with CTV News Vancouver.
The robots are capable of traveling around 500 meters in Vancouver, according to the report, but they can still deliver pizzas in several kilometers.
A First for Pizza Hut
Although a few Pizza Hut franchise owners have experimented with utilizing robots to prepare pizza, this is the first time we've seen the restaurant brand deploy a robotic delivery vehicle.
The collaboration marks a first for Serve Robotics as it is the first time the company has employed its delivery bot in Canada.
As the business looks to move beyond the pilot project, other areas in Canada may soon find robots knocking on their doors to deliver their pizzas.
