Computer chip maker Micron is making a huge move toward its progress after investing $100 billion in the construction of the chip factory in the United States.
The semiconductor mega fab will be constructed in Onondaga County, New York. It will be touted as the "largest" chip facility in the country by the time it gets finished.
Micron Wants to Build a Chip Megafab in New York
As part of its plans to improve domestic chip making in the country, Micron Technology will invest a $100 billion investment for a computer chip mega fab in New York, Reuters stated in its latest report.
The completion date of the said facility is expected to be around more than 20 years. The company announced on Tuesday, Oct. 4.
This huge project will generate more jobs in the country. Nearly 50,000 vacant sports in New York are currently open as part of the construction of the largest chip facility in the region.
Micron says that 9,000 high-paying positions are waiting for qualified individuals. The size of the mega fab is equivalent to 40 U.S. football fields. Just imagine its enormous size for this analogy.
The chipmaker launches this billion-dollar project to achieve its long-term goal of "strengthening" the production of US-made chips. The company also sees this as a huge boost in national security and the economy.
Micron adds that upon its completion, 40% of the DRAM production worldwide will occur in the massive factory.
"This historic leading-edge memory mega fab in Central New York will deliver benefits beyond the semiconductor industry by strengthening U.S. technology leadership as well as economic and national security, driving American innovation and competitiveness for decades to come," Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra said in a report by PCMag.

US Needs a Competitive Edge With China
Over the past two months, Micron has invested $40 billion to construct chip plants across various parts of the U.S.
It should be noted that U.S. President Joe Biden approved the CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 at that time. The implementation will cover $52.7 billion in subsidies for manufacturing computer memories alone.
Biden aims to improve the competitive spirit of the country when it comes to chip technology. Although the U.S. is currently a dominant region in semiconductor production, he sees this opportunity to improve the industry further, especially when it involves business with China.
For Biden, what Micron did was "another win for America" since it would generate more opportunities for those looking for good-paying jobs in the country.
Micron sees a 3.1% increase in its shares during the early trading following the announcement about the New York-based chip mega fab.
In recent months, chipmakers such as Intel, Samsung, and TSMC confirmed that they would expand their facilities in the U.S.
