This is just weird. In a good way.
A man in Raleigh, North Carolina recently discovered an unexpected phenomenon on an unusually cold day. In the video he took, bottled water stored in the back of his pickup truck appears to freeze solid in a matter of seconds. He shows it happening twice in the video, and you can clearly see the water inside the bottles turn to solid ice.
Is it a trick? A visual effect?
Nope, it's the real deal. But according to several commenters on the video's page, it's not technically what it appears to be.
The commenters point out that the water was already cold enough to freeze, having been exposed to the cold temperatures of around 12 degrees Fahrenheit for hours. Scientifically speaking, ice crystals don't form in supercooled water until it's agitated. When the man picks up the bottles, the already-freezing-cold water instantly formed ice crystals, turning it solid.
But don't feel bad about enjoying the video. Understanding the science behind what's happening takes nothing away from how fascinating it is to watch it happen.
