General Motors (GM) is pausing GMC's Hummer electric vehicle (EV) production for a couple of weeks starting next month or in November.
The giant automaker confirmed the production halt and explained why it needs to be suspended for a while.
GM to Pause Hummer EV Production
As per the latest news story by Teslarati, GM disclosed that it had to pause the production of its all-electric Hummer pickup sometime in late November.
The EV news website reports that the giant automaker already closed the reservations for its electric Hummer back in September. The move comes as GM is grappling to keep up with the growing demand for its electrified pickup truck.
It is worth noting that a report last July reveals that the renowned carmaker is only producing 12 units of Hummer EV in a day.
But given that, GM is looking to further ramp up the production of its EV offerings starting next year.
The carmaker said in its recent press release that its Bolt EV and Bolt EUV are also gaining traction. The demand for the Bolt has already surpassed the production capacity of GM.
Meanwhile, the Hummer reservations had already reached the 90,000 milestones before the automaker stopped accepting new customers.
But given the strong demand for its pickup truck, why is GM planning to halt its production?
GM Factory Zero Plant Upgrade
The automaker says it plans to complete the upgrades for its Factory Zero Plant in late November. It should help GM in its goal to ramp up its EV production by next year or in 2023.
According to a report by Detroit News, the move to pause production seeks to keep up with the growing demand for all-electric cars.
The carmaker disclosed that it is "pulling ahead body shop upgrades at Factory ZERO for the Silverado EV and taking other steps to prepare to scale EV production in 2023."
And once the upgrades are settled, GM touts that it should significantly ramp up its production of EV offerings.
To be more precise, the automaker is looking to rack up its EV production to 70,000 per year. It is far from its current annual peak of 44,000.
But to achieve these increased production figures, GM says it needs to pause the production of its highly-anticipated Hummer EV. It remains to be seen how long the production suspension would actually last. But the automaker predicted it would take "several weeks" before it resumes.
