Job hunting is often challenging but sometimes it does not go well for other job seekers. One of the most important but often ignored aspects of a job application is having updated references.
Some people tend to skip this part without knowing its importance to the employers. With referral programs all over social media, you should not miss adding a good reference to increase your chances of landing a job.
Tech Companies Prefer Candidates With References
If you're planning to seek a position in the best tech firms in the world, make sure that your references will stand out among others.
Microsoft and Google are used to screening their applicants through this to see if the candidate is perfectly fit for the vacant position.
In connection to this, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) surveyed how employees run a screening program for prospects.
SHRM revealed that 92% of employers still stick to the usual background checks as part of pre-employment screening. It should be noted that 98% of organizations look for the candidates' criminal records.
As noted by industry expert Jason Morris, rescreening is considered expensive and risky on the part of employers.
"If a company rescreens its employees every two years, and an employee is charged with theft two days after being hired, the company would not know until the rescreen is run," Morris said.
Why Should You Have a Reference?
If you have previously worked for a client, you might have asked them about their feedback regarding your output. This testimonial is what you need to attract more high-paying clients for your service.
The same goes with the reference, which serves as a living testimony of your craft. The Next Web says that this is where your future employer finds answers so they can know more about your personality, experience, and other related stuff.
When hunting for a job, you should always prepare your preference at all times, especially if you are applying to different companies. You never know if your potential employer requires you to have that.
Having a reference hastens the screening for employers. It helps them determine if you are the missing piece of the company in a particular position.

Updating Your Preference
You have to be serious when selecting people for your references. Do not select your close colleagues or your family here. You need to choose people you have previously worked with such as your boss and your co-workers.
Before putting them on the paper, ask permission for their approval.
In case you have bad blood with your former boss, you don't need to include him/her as a reference. Think of another employer who has left a huge impact on your career growth.
Since your work experiences change over time, it's important to update your references regularly. It's a crucial process you need to do if you want to get hired for your desired role.
