BeReal has confirmed via Twitter that the app experienced a glitch today. Users from the platform could not upload photos for multiple hours. The Paris-based application has encountered a shutdown for hours, and the only response from the platform "yup, we're on it."
The tweet proves that the company is not communicative enough about its problems. The hashtag #BeRealDown trended for hours by its users on Twitter. Some have asked for details regarding the glitch but were given nothing by the company.
TechCrunch tried to reach the application but refused to answer multiple questions, such as what caused the problem, how severe it was, and how it was resolved. The company resolved the issue three hours later and confirmed it via Twitter.
Still, no information was detailed by the company as of the moment regarding the shutdown.
Success of the Application
For months, the application received a lot of support, most especially from Gen Z, as it climbed to the top of the charts in App Store. It also surpassed notable apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok, which holds the number one spot at some moments.
Sensor Tower reported that BeReal is currently number one in nine markets. Adding to this is the application's inclusion in the top five Overall iPhone Apps for over forty countries. It was also ranked in the Top 500 iPhone Social Networking Apps in 38 countries and included in the Top 100 iPhone Social networking apps in five countries.
BeReal's Features and How it is Different
The application's aim in making the platform is to be different from the existing ones like Instagram, Facebook, etc., as per Protocol. It encourages its users to post photos that are unedited and more 'authentic' than what the people are posting on other apps.
The application reminds its users, at any time of the day, to post a photo of them in under two minutes. Users will not be able to post their photos after two minutes have passed, and they will have to wait for another reminder from the app to do so.
TikTok Now and BeReal
The success of the application has already made a mark on other applications like TikTok. Just this month, TikTok added a feature that is very similar to BeReal.
A few days after its announcement of adding this new feature to the application, a standalone app called 'TikTok Now' was launched globally last week. This strategy was TikTok's take on attracting new users.
Monetizing the Platform
Financial Times reported last week that BeReal might add paid features in the application as the company will start monetizing the content of the users. With more than 15 million daily active users, this idea from its investors was considered by the company.
As of now, the application will still be free for users to utilize. No final decision has been made regarding monetization. If it pushes through, the possible date of its operation will be next year.
