Amazon and NFL Deal

The game between Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers, which was aired last Thursday, was the first of fifteen games that will exclusively broadcast on Amazon Prime until 2023.

Amazon is currently paying almost $1 billion annually as part of the deal between the two parties. The contract will be valid and last for the next ten seasons. Thanks to this, the increase of numbers new sign-ups during the game went through for three hours.

This deal made Amazon a step forward from its competitors, who do have the same features as them. Along with Netflix, these are its rivals for offering streaming services; Apple TV Plus, Disney Plus, HBO Max, and Peacock.

Success of the Partnership

Amazon Sports Division Global Head Jay Marine wrote a memorandum to its employees, and he stated that "By every measure, Thursday Night Football on Prime Video was a resounding success."

No official ratings yet were released by Neilsen to prove this success, as claimed by Amazon. But Mashable reported that it will be hard to match or surpass the 17.9 million viewers for Chiefs-Chargers Thursday Night Football Match last season, both on network and cable television.

This may result in acquiring other exclusive rights to other sporting events, as Amazon could take advantage of the momentum. Especially that recent reports revealed a 19% drop in the number of Amazon Prime Video subscribers from January 2021 to August 2022.

As per CNBC, Amazon has 200 million subscribers around the world and 80 million active Prime Video households in the United States. The subscription costs $139.

This plan offers perks such as free shipping, free grocery delivery, a large streaming library on the platform, Amazon Music access, and Twitch streams that will offer no advertisements.

Along with the Thursday Night Football, Amazon also experiments with alternate broadcasts which will be hosted by Dude Perfect. This will stream stunts and commentary from these hosts while the game takes action that users may watch if the traditional football banter bothers them.

Both of these strategies cater to both generations. The younger generation may enjoy the Dude Perfect stream while the older generation may watch football on the streaming platform that will still provide them a conventional broadcast as it will air ad breaks.

We all know that ads on NFL remain notable and iconic to people and through this, it will give them a nostalgic feeling. In a way, every generation will be pleased with what Amazon offers to its subscribers.
