A developer has made the 1996 first-person shooter Quake to work on the Apple Watch. Tomas Vymazal was able to get the game up and running on watch, as reported by TechCrunch.
Some Work...
Thanks to the existing open source Mac/iOs ports, they have helped significantly to make the game work on the watch. Still, Vymazal uses some tricks up his sleeve to make it work, such as creating a gyroscope and the digital crown work with the game engine that is almost 30 years old. He also did a lot of work to make the game's audio play with the tiny built-in speaker.
Play It By Yourself
It's not the most practical thing to do, but it did serve as an excellent experience. So, if you are interested in playing it on your watch, then you will need to do what Vymazal did. He put the project up on GitHub for others to work around. However, you need to compile the code yourself, and because of the art/levels/etc., assets are not open source, you will need to track down your own copy.
Vymazal uploaded a video to give people the gist of it. You can watch it here.
Available Apple Watch Games
On the other hand, if you are not up for some tinkering yourself, there are other games you can play on the Apple Watch. The watch has its own App Store that is filled with games designed specifically for that tiny screen. All you need to do is go to the App Store on your watch, and search for "games."
Pocket Bandit is one of the best games to play on the Apple Watch, where users can play the role of a safecracker, spinning the crown to unlock safe combinations before the time runs out. It has haptic feedback that will tell you when you're getting close. You can get the game on the App Store for $1.
You can also try your hand at the free game, the Runeblade. This is a role-playing game wherein you will hack and slash your way through a tiny adventure, leveling up, managing inventory, and upgrading your weapons and armor along the way.
Finally, there is Lifeline, a text-based adventure game. Here, you will chat with someone who has landed on an alien planet, and only you can help steer the adventurer to safety. Throughout the day, you will get notifications when the protagonist needs your help.
Are you ready to make the most out of your Apple Watch with these games?
