Last week, Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer revealed that they are committed to keeping Call of Duty on PlayStation for several more years, even beyond the existing deal Sony has with Activision.

In a statement, PlayStation chief Jim Ryan said, "Microsoft has only offered for Call of Duty to remain on PlayStation for three years after the current agreement between Activision and Sony ends." PlayStation thinks that this has an impact on their gamers, and their aim is to ensure they get the highest quality of Call of Duty experience. However, the proposal of Microsoft will undermine their principle.

Under Scrutiny

There is an ongoing argument between Sony and Microsoft over the importance of Call of Duty, which was seen on the documents submitted to Brazil's Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) regulator. According to Sony, it would be challenging for other developers to create a franchise that will compete against Call of Duty. On the other hand, Microsoft argues that it's not as important as its rival makes it out to be.

With this, Microsoft may need to provide more guarantees over the future of Call of Duty to Sony, especially that the competition fears over the franchise are being examined by regulators in the US, Uk, Europe, and other parts of the world.

For one, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) moved to investigate Microsoft's deal with Activision Blizzard more closely. Now, they are moving to the second phase of the investigation, which will involve an independent panel to determine Microsoft's control over games like Call of Duty and World of Warcraft could harm its rivals.

Disagree to Agree?

Sony has two choices in how to handle the Call of Duty franchise now. They can either convince Microsoft to extend the franchise for another years or drop the franchise for good. Sony is bent on ensuring that the franchise will be back on PlayStation in the future. If Microsoft had refused this request from Sony, then it will be difficult to have more games on the franchise. This could be considered as a strong blow for Sony, since Call of Duty is one of the most favorite games for PlayStation fans.

It is even more devastating because the franchise is a very consistent provider of high sales. However, it is not yet known if Microsoft will agree to this, or if they will stick with their current offer for the franchise for another three years.
