After Valve's release of the Dota 2 Battle Pass for International 2022 (TI11), sales are not as hitting quickly, as reported by Gamepur. Despite surpassing $9 million for the prize pool, sales are $1.6 million behind compared to last year in comparative time based on the tracking of The International 2022.
For the past consecutive years, tournaments have outpaced themselves for their total earnings. However, fans were less than pleased with what the battle pass offers that the developer released.
'Coming Soon' Contents for Part One
The gaming community explained several disappointments through different social media platforms, including Reddit, especially the missing parts such as terrain skin and customized creep skins. The 'Coming Soon' banner can be seen on the many sections of the BP and fans are frustrated as no deeper information was indicated.
Some speculations from the thread said that the reason for some of the contents not being available to Part One is because Valve is saving it for Part Two which will be released in November.
Adding to this is the decision of allowing PGL to obtain a betting sponsorship for the Regional Qualifiers, Last Chance Qualifiers, and Group Stage for TI11. This was announced via PGL's official Twitter.
A report from AFK Gaming also states that complaints from several personalities were also visible via Twitter, such as OG's Support Player Tommy 'Taiga' Le, Boom Esports Former Coach Aaron 'Clairvoyance' Kim, and Wildcard Gaming Captain Samuel 'Sammyboy' Anderson.
Prize Pool Over the Years
Despite the disappointment for both BP contents and the decision of PGL, sales are still rising as the prize pool passed the $9 million mark for The International 2022.
This method was done traditionally every year by Valve as they bring new contents to every player to crowdfund the game's biggest competition as per Dot Esports.
Through this, the International holds the top six spots as the largest overall esports prize pools, including the first $40 million esports tournament in history.
Valve took a different route this year by releasing the battle pass on September 1, which is normally released from May to June. This new timetable was changed as the new model will be released in two parts, with the release of Part 2 will take place after The International 11 concludes, specifically on November 2.
The main event will be happening at Singapore Indoor Stadium on October 29 to 30 with a total of thirty teams competing to secure the said prize pool. More details can be seen here.
