American Airlines lost thousands of bags in 2022, which turns out to be more than any other airline in the United States, a recent report from the US Department of Transportation claims.
The Department of Transportation has released its August Air Travel Consumer Report, which gives us a glimpse of the number of lost baggage in airports across the United States.
American Airlines Lost Bags in 2022
As per the latest report by Business Insider, the Department of Transportation has already published its August Air Travel Consumer Report. It gives us a detailed performance of various airlines in the US, specifically how they are handling the baggage of their customers.
The news outlet reports that all of the airlines in the report have shown much worse numbers of "mishandled" luggage than in the same period last year.
The August report includes the performance of US airlines starting in the first month of 2022 up until June.
And it appears that American Airlines had the most number of lost bags for the first couple of months of this year.
The recent Air Travel Consumer Report found out that American Airlines garnered the worst lost baggage rate of 0.93 "number of bags mishandled per 100 enplaned." It is significantly up from its figures last 2021, wherein it got 0.76.
In total, American Airlines mishandled roughly 300,000 bags between January and June 2022. Meanwhile, in 2021, it is only at around 177,000, making it a significant uptick for this year.

US Airlines Lost Bags 2022
On the other hand, Allegiant Air has the lowest number of bags mishandled according to the Department of Transportation Air Travel Consumer Report.
Its number of bags mishandled per 100 enplaned is only 0.16, maintaining its performance in the same period in 2021. In total, it translates to roughly 5,466.
The second to the worst performer, which outperformed American Airlines by a single ranking, is none other than Alaska Airlines. It mishandled 0.75 bags per 100 enplaned.
JetBlue AirWaysUnited Airlines are in the eighth and seventh ranking of the mishandled baggage report, respectively.
But it looks like United Airlines and Delta Airlines are having a hard time keeping up with their performance last year. In fact, Business Insider notes that both airlines have tripled their count of lost bags in the same period.
