Lockheed Martin has successfully delivered 60+kW-class high-energy laser to the US Navy. Also known as HELIOS, which stands for High-Energy Laser with Integrated Optical-Dazzler and Surveillance, this is the first-ever tactical weapon system to be deployed to existing ships. According to Interesting Engineering, the weapon can also provide directed energy capability to the fleet.
The HELIOS
The HELIOS will help enhance the overall combat system effectiveness of the ship that can deter future threats and deliver additional protection for Sailors. It also represents a solid foundation for the delivery of robust and powerful laser weapon system capabilities.
However, the HELIOS is described as something that is more than just a high-energy laser because of the multi-mission capabilities that include long-range Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR), and Counter UAS-mounted ISR (C-ISR) Dazzler.
The HELIOS can address the current needs of the fleet with its deep magazine, low cost per kill, speed of light delivery, and precision response. Furthermore, its mature and scalable architecture can support the laser power levels to counter additional threats in the future.
As stated on Lockheed Martin's page on their new weapon, "HELIOS leverages technology building blocks from significant, long-term internal research and development projects that continue to advance the Navy's goal for fielding laser weapon systems aboard surface ships and putting the Navy on the right side of the cost curve for threat engagements."
The development of the weapon started in January 2018, and it has shown impressive breakthroughs in advanced technology.

Laser Weapon System is Even More Possible
With this new development, it only shows that laser weapon systems are here, and it will continue to transform the world. However, Lockheed Martin and the US Navy didn't specify where exactly the new system will be deployed.
But with the development of laser weapon systems, it will give a new edge in warfare against potential enemies. It will also enhance the overall capabilities of the Navy's maritime fleet. The weapon will also provide support for the fleet and national security. As a result, it will only strengthen the defense of the United States.
This new development, which is considered to be the first of its kind, by Lockheed Martin and the US Navy is definitely a step forward in warfare. It will show the military's capability to defend itself against threats including unmanned aerial vehicles, small attack boats and other threats. It will also address the challenges in difficult operating conditions while providing a low cost per engagement to the fleet.
It will be interesting to see what the future of laser weapons is, and it will certainly be a great time to see ships with lasers mounted all over it for defense and offense. One thing's for sure, it will be an innovation in warfare, and it will further prove that the United States is on top of the game.
