Apple's iPadOS 16.1 has been rolled out today for developers to test, skipping the iPadOS16.0 until after the iOS starts to roll out on iPhones.
The company stated via TechCrunch, "This is an especially big year for iPadOS. As its own platform with features specifically designed for iPad, we have the flexibility to deliver iPadOS on its own schedule. This Fall, iPadOS will ship after iOS, as version 16.1 in a free software update,".
Meanwhile, no dates were given by the company regarding its new set-up. Apple traditionally releases the iOS and iPadOS at the same time, yet some reports have already seen this coming since the separation of the operating system of iPads and iPhones back in 2019.
As per The Verge, the reason for the delay might be because of the improvement of the iPad's Stage Manager. This multitasking option received complaints as it still has bugs and other problems, yet Apple has not confirmed anything. People also worry about what will happen to macOS Ventura, which also has a Stage Manager option.
What to Expect in iPadOS 16
Other than the new lock screen, the iOS16 includes the new editing and deleting ability of iMessage, as per Bloomberg. Users can now edit sent messages that other users can see through an edit history log. This will only reveal that a certain user edited a message but will not reveal the original.
It also includes the ability to unsend messages within 2 minutes. These updates were announced during the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference last June. As of the moment, iOS 16 is still in testing and can be changed until the final product.
Freeform will also be included in the updated system that creates new projects and assets for diagramming. Users can also edit embedding images, audio, videos, documents, PDFs, and web links through this feature.
Apple will have an event this upcoming October where these features will be presented together with the new Macs, iPads, and the iPhone 14s.
New iPad and its Features
Along with the iPhone 14 series, speculations for iPad 2022 were also circulating since June this year. Aside from the switch to USB-C ports, a bigger screen will be expected and slimmer than the current model measuring 248.62 x 179.50 x 6.98mm.
The physical features will be similar to the 9th generation iPads as per the obtained CAD renderings from a case manufacturer. Meaning that it will still have large bezels, a power button, etc. The iPad Air 4th Generation and iPhone 12 series' A14 chipset is rumored for the 2022 model.
