US Continues to See Rise in Gun Violence Cases
Despite a spike in cases of gun-related crimes, relaxed gun control laws are still observed in numerous states in the US. Many consider the rising numbers of recorded gun violence as a concerning public safety issue, let alone a global human rights issue.
According to data from Amnesty International, more than 500 people die every day because of gun-related violence. Between 2012 and 2016, a total of 1.4 million firearm-related deaths were recorded globally.
In the US, President Biden recently signed a bipartisan gun safety bill that is geared to enhance background checks for underage people and boost mental health initiatives. Many believe that these moves are not enough to address the threat of rampant gun violence.
A recent poll by Axios states that 4 out of 10 Americans fear falling victim to gun violence.
According to the poll made by the University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy and The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, a majority of Americans believe that gun violence is on the rise and that stricter gun control laws must be put in place.
