Elon Musk just shared a meme that tackled taxes and the IRS potentially hiring agents. The huge question, however, is how true is this meme, and is the IRS really hiring 87,000 new agents?
IRS Plans to Hire 87,000 Special Agents
In a Tweet by Elon Musk, with the caption "Fate (heart) Irony," a meme was shared with the text "when the country that revolved over taxes hires 87,000 new IRS agents." The meme tackled the topic of discussions regarding the agency potentially hiring new workers.
Elon Musk has had numerous discussions in the past with different government workers regarding the taxes he pays. In an article by Barron's, it was stated that in 2021, the Tesla CEO had to pay $11 billion in taxes alone.
Elon Musk's Response When Called Out Regarding Taxes
The CEO of Tesla even took shots at a certain politician suggesting changing the "rigged tax code" so that Musk will pay taxes "and stop freeloading off everyone else." To this, however, Elon Musk replied that he will actually pay more tax than anyone else in American history.
To add, Elon Musk even playfully pointed out that despite him paying taxes, they would easily just be spent. In a follow-up tweet, he stated "don't spend it all at once... oh wait you did already."
There are Only 724 Billionaires in the US
Going back to Elon Musk "mocking" the IRS, as per Fox Business, it was noted that a user pointed out that the 87,000 new agents will be hired not to go after Elon Musk but to go after the general republic.
The key distinction is that the agents that the IRS will be hiring will most likely be focused on the regular people since most billionaires like Elon Musk get automatic edits, as per the thread. As per World Population Review, there are only 724 billionaires in the United States.

IRS Specifications of the Special Agents Job Opening
With only 724 billionaires in the United States, hiring 87,000 agents to go after just the billionaires alone would not seem like a fair allocation of resources due to disproportion. This would result in over 120 agents for just one single billionaire.
Although probably not the target of the IRS hiring, Elon Musk still decided to share a meme regarding the situation.
As seen on the IRS website, the agency is already hiring "special agents now" under the page "IRS criminal investigation special agent." When highlighting the duties of the position, it was noted that agents will have to be "willing and able to participate in arrests, execution of search warrants, and other dangerous assignments."
