TikTok Music appears in its parent firm, ByteDance's new trademark filing, hinting at what could be the next biggest rival of the top streaming services, Spotify and Apple Music.
The video-sharing platform, TikTok, has become a phenomenal name in the world of social media, but it appears to be planning to expand its services moving forward.
TikTok Music and ByteDance Trademark
As per the latest news story by Tech Radar, the China-based parent firm of the highly-popular TikTok, ByteDance has filed a new trademark application in the United States.
The recent trademark of the Chinese tech giant filed for a new service that goes by the name "TikTok Music."
The name of the new ByteDance service itself already suggests that it is highly likely to be a Spotify-like streaming platform, wherein its users could stream their favorite music.
Tech Radar further notes in the same report that the new US trademark filing of ByteDance explained what its upcoming service plans to offer.
TikTok Music: What to Expect?
The Chinese tech firm says that TikTok Music is an app for mobile devices and PC.
The trademark filing states that the app "enables users to purchase, play, share [and] download music."
But besides these functions, the proposed TikTok Music app also lets users listen to non-downloadable content or exclusively stream videos and non-music audio.
ByteDance also adds in its recent filing that TikTok Music would offer advertising services.
It could hint that the new service is likely to get a free ad-supported version, much like what Spotify currently features.
New Spotify, Apple Music Rival?
The features that ByteDance mentioned in its filing are mostly available in Apple Music and Spotify, the biggest players in the world of streaming services.
But do take this with a grain of salt as trademark filings do not necessarily mean that it would launch any time soon.
However, it is not far-fetched that ByteDance is working on its music streaming service as TikTok already offers tons of music selections to its users.
According to a recent report by Dot LA, the new ByteDance trademark filing also hints that TikTok Music could also offer podcast and radio services, which Spotify heavily capitalizes on.
The trademark application also suggests a function that Apple Music and Spotify have yet to directly offer -- a karaoke feature.
Although both Spotify and Apple Music lets their users access the lyrics of most of their songs in the library, it is not a full-blown karaoke function.
