YouTube is adding a new feature that makes it much easier for creators to repurpose their longer content into "Shorts." The platform is doing this by an easy "Edit into a Short" tool that can be found inside the regular YouTube app.
YouTube is Competing with TikTok by Adding an Edit Into a Short Tool
According to the story by The Verge, YouTube is trying to do this in order to better compete with TikTok. The platform is adding the "Edit into a Short" tool for both its iOS and Android applications.
The new feature allows users to select up to 60 minutes from the original longer videos and clip them into Shorts right from the app on iOS or Android. After clipping them into shorter videos, users will be able to add texts, filters, and even add video shots from the Shorts camera or from the photo library.
Google Says Newly Edited Shorts Video Will Link to Original Video
A Google announcement post sees YouTube says that the finished Shorts will directly link to the video where the clip originally came from. This could make Shorts a more ideal way of promoting tools for the creator's longer content.
Shorts' ability to promote longer videos is expected to be a key incentive for creators to dive in while the platform is still testing out different monetization options for the feature. Should a viewer enjoy the Shorts, they would no longer need to go to their creator channel in order to search for the full video.
Edit Into a Short Tool Cannot Work on New Content
Unlike other tools that help users create Shorts, however, the Edit into a Short tool cannot be used with user uploads. Instead, it only allows users to use the different clips that they have already uploaded in long-form content.
Ever since its launch in 2020, YouTube has been putting an immense focus on its Shorts feature and has even decided to set up a fund to pay creators that are uploading Shorts. As noted by Tech Crunch, the company has even been padding out its library by converting videos that already exist into Shorts.

Company Announced Over 1.5 Billion People Watching Shorts Per Month
The company did this by converting videos that were filmed both in a vertical orientation and at least under 60 seconds in length. Just recently, YouTube announced that more than 1.5 billion people watched Shorts every single month.
The post by YouTube also said that the new tool will allow users to bring fresh life to their classic content and that the feature will be available very soon. Although the feature might not be able to replace the traditional video editing software, it would help encourage creators to look at the back catalog in order to see if they have content that works well with Shorts.
