Ford Motor Company has been known for developing cars that are made special for police departments. However, with the trend of electric vehicles, the automaker is gearing for an all-electric pickup truck for police officers!
The F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle (SSV), which Ford describes as the first electric pickup truck specifically designed for law enforcement, was presented on Thursday, July 28.
First All-Electric Pickup Truck
The Ford F-150 Lightning, the company's first all-electric pickup truck, has the potential to revolutionize the way electric vehicles are adopted, especially in the US, where the F-Series has long held the title of undisputed truck king, according to Electrek's report.
Electrek further notes that initial feedback from customers has been very encouraging since the first Lightning deliveries started this past spring.
However, it is worth noting that Ford Motor Company has been producing vehicles for the police for more than 70 years.
Ford Pro claims that over 12,000 police agencies in the US alone are among its clients and that it sells more police cars to the men and women in blue than all of its rivals combined.
In a press release released on Thursday, July 28, Ford officially unveiled the 2023 F-150 Lightning Pro Special Service Vehicle (SSV), outlining some of its important performance specifications to aid US law enforcement.

Police-Ready F-150 Lightning
Ford claims that the police-ready F-150 Lightning can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in less than four seconds with a one-foot rollout and an extended battery pack.
The F-150 Pro SSV was created to handle many circumstances that officers come into while performing their responsibilities, such as helping at an accident or crime scene or being required to pull a boat or trailer, as noted by the publication.
The pickup truck is equipped with police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters to help holstered officers enter and exit EV more easily. It also has built-in steel intrusion plates in front seatbacks.
Its standard battery has 452 hp 775 lb.-ft. of torque, 7,700 lb. for towing capacity, and 2,235 for max payload.
For its extended-range battery, it boasts a sub-four sec 0-60 mph, 580 hp, 775 lb.-ft. of torque, and 10,000-pound tow capability.
When police departments buy F-150 Lightning Pro SSVs, they are also eligible for a wide range of additional Ford Pro perks. The automaker said that more information, including the F-150 Lightning's range, will be released later this summer.
