A "Roblox" hacker claims to have leaked the internal documents of the gaming platform, which includes information about its games and creators.
The whole incident appears to be part of an attempt to extort the gaming platform, Roblox.
'Roblox' Hack: Internal Documents Leaks
As per the latest news story by The Gamer, hackers have stolen around 4 GB of "Roblox" internal documents after the cybercriminals targeted one of its employees in a phishing scam.
The online news outlet says in its report that the massive amounts of internal documents include the email addresses, identification details, and spreadsheets of some of the biggest creators in the gaming platform.
And all of these internal "Roblox "documents have been published in an online forum.
The gaming platform boasts that more than half of the kids in the United States are players of "Roblox." To be more precise, it garnered roughly 45 million daily users last year or in 2021.
Roblox Employee Targeted by Phishing Scam
The publication of the internal files of "Roblox" reportedly all started from a single phishing campaign targeting an employee in the gaming platform.
The gaming firm said that "'Roblox' has been actively investigating a phishing incident." Roblox further states that a phishing scam targeted one of its employees to carry out the cyberattack.
According to a recent report by Video Games Chronicle, the threat actors used tactics capitalizing on social engineering on their targeted victim.
Roblox Says its an Extortion Scheme
Meanwhile, "Roblox" discloses that the hacking is part of an elaborate extortion scheme.
The company says in a statement that the stolen internal documents were used in an extortion scheme.
But it turns out that "Roblox'' refused to cooperate with the cybercriminals. And as such, the 4 GB worth of private information has been leaked in an online forum.
Video Games Chronicle highlights in its report that Roblox is currently valued at a staggering $68 billion. Not to mention that it draws millions of daily active users.
So at that scale, the cybercriminals might have assumed that they are highly likely to get millions of dollars by extorting the giant gaming firm. But, Roblox claims that it refused to cooperate with the scheme.
Instead, the gaming platform states that it swiftly improved the security of its systems to prevent another similar incident from happening again.
"Roblox" reveals that its in-house security team has quickly teamed up with independent experts to prevent another extortion scheme in the future.
The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Roblox, David Daszucki, has already apologized for the server outage that the incident has caused.
