Nikon's DSLR and SLR development activities may be halted. Of course, this will sadden many non-pro and professional photographers, as well as videographers.
For the past few years, Nikon has been among the top camera manufacturers producing advanced camera gadgets for filmmaking, photoshoots, etc.
As of writing, the Japanese camera developer hasn't confirmed this plan yet. But, if you will check the latest models of DLSRs and SLRs, Nikon hasn't launched new units after 2020.
But, experts stated that Nikon will still continue selling its newest SLR and DSLR models, such as Nikon D6, as well as D6, D3500, and other newer models.
Nikon DSLR, SLR Development To Be Halted?
According to Engadget's latest report, Nikon stopped developing compact cameras and discontinued the creator of APS-C and full-frame DLSR lenses, as well as camera bodies, back around 2021.
This is because of the rising smartphone models with advanced camera features, which can capture images and videos comparable to its DLSR and SLR models.
On the other hand, various data showed that the camera sales generated by Nikon decreased over the past five years. Interchangeable lens camera sales dropped by around 5.34 million units back in 2021.
This is a massive decrease since its sales record in 2017 reached around 11.67 million. If you are among the worried consumers of Nikon, the best thing you can do right now is to wait for the manufacturer's further announcements.
What Nikon Plans To Do?
Since the Japanese camera maker hasn't confirmed the rumored production halt, it is hard to conclude what its real plan is in case this speculation comes true.
But, Nikkei Asia reported that Nikon might focus on working on advanced mirrorless camera models. For those unfamiliar with this type of cam, it is a unit that features a single removal lense and a digital display.
It is quite different from a DSLR since it doesn't have a reflex mirror or an optical viewfinder. Although its a limited interchangeable lens selection, a mirrorless camera still offers great video quality.
On the other hand, it is lighter and more portable than a DSLR. If you are not doing heavy photoshoots or working on a film, a mirrorless cam is more than enough for your activities.
In 2020, rumors claimed that the Panasonic Lumix S5 would be launched.
In 2021, a new Nikon lens with 17.84 million pixel resolution was believed to be under development.
