On Friday, July 8, Sony announced that its PlayStation Store would remove access to hundreds of movie titles and TV shows from Studio Canal that customers in Austria and Germany previously bought.
This decision will take effect on Aug. 31.
Sony to Remove Studio Canal Content
According to The Verge, the company's decision came a year after the PlayStation group stopped offering movie and TV show purchases and rentals in August 2021 due to the rise of streaming-video services like Netflix, Hulu, HBOMax, and Disney+.
At the time, Sony assured its customers in Germany and Austria that they could still access movies and TV shows they bought through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. But that has now changed.
PlayStation posted notices about the impending removal of the Studio Canal content for both Austrian and German customers on its official website.
PlayStation stated that starting Aug. 31, because of their evolving licensing agreements with content providers, Austrian and German customers will no longer be able to view their previously purchased Studio Canal content, and it will be removed from their video library.
The PlayStation Store's removal of the movies and TV shows was previously reported by 4KFilme, a German website.
However, it is not clear whether PlayStation Store will refund customers for their purchases of movies that will no longer be available, and a Sony representative declined to give any details about the decision.
How Much Content Will Be Removed?
According to CBR, the list of Studio Canal-distributed titles that will be removed includes 314 titles in Germany and 137 in Austria.
These include Studio Canal-financed films like "Paddington" movie, "Non Stop," and "Shaun the Sheep Movie." Also, titles that will no longer be available to PlayStation Store customers in Austria and Germany include several Lionsgate movies, including "Saw," "Hunger Games," and "John Wick."
