Canberra Cafe is Dealing with Staff Shortage by Hiring a Robot
According to the news by ABC, the addition of the robot was still considered a novelty, but experts are saying that there could be an increase in these mechanical workers, especially within the hospitality industry.
Canberra cafe decided to employ a robot due to its desperate search for workers. The business reportedly had a hard time looking for human workers to fill out certain roles, and due to this being unsuccessful, they have decided to hire a robot to help them.
Cafe Owner Said They Spent Months Looking for New Staff Before the Decision
As further reported, Sam Vekiriya, the owner of Canberra cafe, decided to welcome an autonomous robot waiter to his team. This was after he had spent months trying to look for new staff for the business.
The robot is responsible for both delivering new food and drinks to tables while returning the used dishes back to the kitchen. While doing this, the robot also patiently waits for people passing by before continuing its route.
The Business Plans to Buy the Robot for $30,000 Saying It is Worth the Cost
As per the report, the robot was rented out for a trial period and after it ends, he would be buying the robot for $30,000. As per Vekiriya, the robot was worth the investment saying, "it is worth that cost."
The robot was described as helping the customers get faster service while the other staff can be utilized on other tasks instead of just serving food and clearing tables. As per Vekiriya, the main decision to employ a robot was due to their struggle.

The Robot Used in the Cafe is Called 'BellaBot'
Vekiriya also noted that the novelty factor that the robot added to the business was also a plus for them. In a statement, he said that they were looking for staff for a year and a half, which led them towards a desperate last three months.
With the robot added to the team, Vekiriya stated that "everyone is grateful" and that the robot also provided fun and entertainment along with less workload for the staff. To clarify, he also stated that the robot will not be replacing everyone's job and that it will be deployed in order to help the staff work harder and smarter instead.
According to an article by Gizmochina, the robot comes from Pudurobotics and is called the "BellaBot." It is a cat-like robot with ears and a cute cat face and customers can stroke its head while it detects cups and plays when they have been lifted from the trays.
