The challenge to make phone cameras hidden has been going on for some time. However, the Axon 40 Ultra ZTE may have finally made it with its Under-Display Camera (UDC).
The quest for hidden mobile phone cameras is still ongoing, as phone companies try to make the most of the screen.
The UDC on the Axon 40 Ultra ZTE
The UDC of the Axon 40 Ultra ZTE is a 16-megapixel camera that resides under a 6.8-inch 2480 x 1116 OLED panel. While on its back, it has three 64-megapixel cameras-a 16mm ultrawide, 25mm standard wide, and 91mm telephoto lens.
What makes it interesting is its selfie UDC which is a challenge to develop. Fortunately, the technology used to conceal the camera under the display has significantly improved.
According to ZTE, the screen on top of the camera is integrated with the rest of the screen with some adjustments to its pixel drive technology and how the circuits were wired. They also had some software updates that enable the UDC to sync seamlessly with the rest of the display.
It is apparent that the phone's selfie camera truly disappears into the rest of the screen, which is different from Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 3, which remains to still be obvious.
However, if you really look hard into the phone's screen, you will see the lens in bright light, but it's not that distracting. Even with white screens, you will find the lens difficult to spot.
Of course, there is a bit of a change in image quality, but it's not so bad. In fact, many people may not even notice a drop in image quality due to the UDC.

The Other Features
The new Axon 40 Ultra has a 6.8 inch AMOLED display with a FullHD+ resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate. The display area over the camera comes with a pixel density of 400ppi, which is similar to the ZTE Axon 30 5G.
With the ZTE Selfie Algorithm 3.0, selfies will be so much better on the Axon 40 Ultra. Plus, it uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to reduce noise and make any adjustments to the image.
It also highlights nighttime photography with the improved light capture that enables Smart Moon, Star Photography Algorithm, and AI constellation.
What powers everything here is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset that you can get in either 8Gb or 12GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. It keeps your phone's lights on with the 5,000 mAh battery supported by 65W charging.
Finally, it comes with dual stereo speakers with DTS audio, Snapdragon sound, and MyOS 12 based on Android 12.
Currently, the phone is available to buy in China. However, it will be set to launch globally this month.
