Are you a fan of watching movies? If you enjoy watching in cinemas, then you might have also explored the idea of a drive-in movie. June 6 is National Drive-In Movie day, and is also the first-ever drive-in opening in the US.
The History of National Drive-In Movie Day
The event marks the day the US' first drive-in theater was opened in New Jersey by Richard M. Hollingshead Jr. Initially, it was created for seniors who find it difficult to sit for an extended period in traditional movie theaters.
Therefore, Hollingshead made a small drive-in theater for his mom in his driveway. He placed a big screen in his backyard with a Kodak projector on his car.
In 1932, the same technique was used to open the first patented drive-in theater in a space that can fit 400 cars. Its goal is to accommodate an entire family in the open air.
The first movie that was played in the teather was Wife Beware, a British comedy.
By the late '50s, over 3,000 drive-ins could be found in the US. It was in New York where the biggest drive-in theater can be found that can accommodate up to 2,500 vehicles. Moreover, it had a restaurant and a playground. The attendees can also take advantage of their indoor seating arrangement.
However, the trend declined when color television, cable TV, and VCRs were introduced to the public.

Celebrate National Drive-In Movie Day
Even though there are fewer drive-in movie theaters today, you can still celebrate today by going to a drive-in theater. Go for a movie night with your family or friends. While you're at it, make it even more enjoyable by prepping snacks.
Another thing you can do is host a movie night at home. You can set up a screen in the backyard with nice seating arrangements. Make sure to have some blankets around because it could get chilly out.
You can also choose to support indie filmmakers today by simply posting a supportive comment, review, or rating for their movies to boost their morale. This will definitely keep these indie filmmakers to keep going.
Even though drive-in movie theaters have declined, it is still a fun thing to do with your loved ones every once in a while. Fortunately, there are still a few drive-in theaters that you can visit today. You only need to do a bit of research to find theaters near you. Make sure to bring your family or friends with you because it will surely be a great time. Besides, it's not every day you get to do this.
