Esports: France Bans English Gaming Jargons to Preserve the French Language

Nowadays, we usually hear the word "streamer," especially when visiting Twitch, YouTube, and other related platforms. This term pertains to a person who broadcasts his/her gaming session to an online audience.

While the use of the esports jargon is scattered across various gaming communities, not all countries approve of its usage. According to Engadget, France has finally imposed a ban on gaming terms to preserve the purity of the French language.

The word "pro gamer" will instead become "joueur professionnel" to suit more on the French side. Meanwhile, the term "streamer" is now "joueur-animateur en direct."

In an interview with AFP, the officials said that the gaming industry is now bombarded with a lot of complicated words that appear to be difficult to understand for non-gamers.

Degradation in the Use of Native Language

Furthermore, the country's language watchdog, Académie Française has been on high alert regarding the declining use of its own language.

According to the organization, the "degradation" of the language must not be seen as inevitable. The official adjustment for the new implementation took effect this week, and it now binds to the government employees.

Other than that, the word "esports" will now transform into "jeu video de competition," while "cloud gaming" will now be used as "jeu video en nuage."

Currently, the experts have been looking for online sources, including gaming websites. They will inspect if any of them use French terms.

This change aims to unite all the French people in the country. The ministry notes that this would later pave the way for easier communication with all individuals, The Guardian reports.

In another story related to esports, Fly, a former team captain of Evil Geniuses, has announced that he has returned to the NA pro team.

According to Dotesports, the Israeli "Dota 2" pro gamer is reuniting once again with another support player, Cr1t, who is currently leading EG.

After his short stint with SEA squad Talon, Fly decided to test the grounds once again with his former teammates. The organization confirms that the four-time "Dota 2" Major champion is slated to join for the final round of this year's Dota Pro Circuit.

The International 10 run for EG was a heartbreaker, especially when Fly left the team after exiting earlier from the most prestigious "Dota 2" tournament.

At the time, Evil Geniuses acquired former VP carry Nightfall as their offlaner. To complete the lineup, the North American team also got two-time TI winner JerAx, but this time as a position 5 player.
