Lucid Recalls More than 1,000 of its EV Vehicles Because of Wiring Issues

Luxury electric vehicle maker Lucid has issued a recall for the Air EV because of potential problems stemming from the car's wiring harness, and this is despite already struggling to meet their production targets.

Lucid Recalls EV Due to Wiring Issues

In a recent notice posted on the NHTSA website and seen by Lucid Insiders, a summary for the recall says that there are unsecured wires on 2022 Air vehicles, and it could cause the EV's displays to turn off.

And since the Air's displays contain critical information, including speed, warning indicators, and range, this would present a hazard in violation of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or FMVSS.

The notice also states that the potential number of affected vehicles is around 1,117. That means with Lucid having delivered less than 1,000 cars up until recently, the EV recall appears to cover all 2022 Air Dream Edition and Grand Touring models, according to TechCrunch.

For any potentially affected Lucid EV owners, you can get more info by calling Lucid's customer service at 1-888-995-8243 and mentioning recall number NCR-22-01-0.

The official notification letters are slated to be sent out on June 20th. Meanwhile, for EVs that are subject to the recall, the NHTSA says Lucid dealers will be responsible for inspecting vehicles and addressing the issue as needed, and there won't be any extra charge.

Going forward, Lucid Insiders claims the automaker has already started making adjustments to the glass canopy on new vehicles to prevent any problems with unsecured wires.

However, perhaps the bigger concern is that this EV recall comes just a couple of months after Lucid recalled 200 cars for having front strut dampers that may have been improperly installed by their supplier.

And with reservations for the Air now exceeding 25,000 vehicles, fixing any issues will be hugely important if Lucid hopes to deliver those vehicles to their customers in a timely manner.

On May 25, a Lucid spokesperson provided Engadget with an official statement regarding the Air recall.

The Lucid spokesperson said that the safety of their customers and their families is their priority, which is why they recall the 2022 Lucid Air vehicles because of the possibility that the wiring connection to the instrument panel has not been secured properly during assembly.

The spokesperson further confirmed that there are 1,117 affected vehicles, and the company has estimated that the defect is present in 1% of their vehicles.

So far, Lucid has not reported any instances when these components have failed in a vehicle or caused any interruption to the instrument display panel.

Other Lucid Recalls

In February, Lucid recalled more than 200 of its sedans because of safety issues, and it sent its shares down by 5%, according to Reuters.

The California-based automaker said there was a chance that the front strut damper - which is a part used in the suspension - in its sedans was assembled improperly by the supplier.

Lucid has not reported any instances that led to an accident because of the problem with the front strut damper.

In early May, Lucid Air EV raised its prices by 13%.This decision came after Lucid's rivals, Tesla and Rivian, also increased their prices.
