Street View in the Sky
Tech Giant Google just launched a new mode for Maps on Wednesday, May 11, which aimed to give users a vivid and realistic look at the places that they wish to visit. This feature is called the "Immersive View", which is somehow similar to a Street View in the sky.
This new mode will let you look over a location from above to get a general vibe of the neighborhood or city, it also helps you thoroughly to find the specific spots that you want to go to.
Additionally, Google Maps has included its live traffic and business information as well so that you get a real-time look at the spots you want to hit up.
It is worth noting that this mode employs computer vision and AI to combine Map's existing Street View feature and aerial photography to generate high-resolution models of the buildings, urban features, and other characteristics of a specific location.
"With our new immersive view, you'll be able to experience what a neighborhood, landmark, restaurant or popular venue is like - and even feel like you're right there before you ever set foot inside," Miriam Daniel, VP of Google Maps, wrote in a blog post.
The VP added that this will help travelers make the "most informed decisions" before traveling to their destinations.
The current Google Maps' Street View does not allow you to look at the given location in real-time, over time the buildings and landmarks of these places might be outdated, which poses challenges in accurately navigating the user's way to their destined locations.
But this time, Immersive view will enable users to see what the area looks like at multiple weather conditions and different times of the day.
Where Can I Use the Immersive View?
Immersive View will first roll out in places like Tokyo, London, New York, Los Angeles, and San Francisco later this year. Google said that the rest of the cities will soon follow since they still need to ensure that all of its features will work effectively once it is made widely accessible.
Liz Reid, the VP of engineering at Google, attributes the features of Immersive View to the advances made by Google Earth's massive zoom. She said that the company has been working on this feature for years, they went through several trial and errors and multiple demos in order to perfect the zoom mode.
Google also noted that it has recently launched its eco-routing feature, which enables drivers located in the US and Canada to select the most fuel efficient route. The company said that this has been proven to be effective since it prevented half a million metric tons of carbon emissions.
